The Acquasanta Cave
The presence of a source of mineral water with therapeutic qualities, made the place well known since ancient times. Inside the cave, a few traces of rock painting on the ceiling, is what remains of the frescos which covered the walls originally. Over the entrance some majolica tiles, decorated with grapes and leaves on a white field, still frame the inscription “Grotta dell’Acquasanta”. Archaeological excavations, carried out in the park of villa Belmonte, confirm the presence of a Punic-Phoenician settlement in this area of the town. The cave is accessed from the marina situated in front of the small square where Giovanni Ventimiglia marquis of Geraci, built his Villa and the adjoining Church dedicated to the Madonna of the Letter. The Villa soon became the centre of the new seaside village. Subsequently the property passed to the Pandolfo brothers, two priests, who decided to exploit the therapeutic qualities of the mineral waters and establish a spa in 1871. Today the water no longer flows, channeled into pipes flowing into the sea. |
