Cemetery of the English
The non-Catholic cemetery of the English is located on the edge of the village, in a rectangular area surrounded by walls. It is leaning against the former Tobacco factory, which, over the years was expanded and enlarged, changing the perimeter of the area intended for the burials. The land was surrounded by myrtles and cypresses; today there are ficus, asparagus, oleanders, dwarf palms and ivy. Besides Protestants, Orthodox, Jews and atheists, here rest the members of the Whitakers and Caflisch. In 1966 during the excavation for the construction of the shipyards, a lead plate was discovered with the inscription “1626”. In 1833 the entrance door was decorated with carving and crowned by a simple frame, above which there is the stucco sculpture of the genius of Health. The pague epidemic in 1628 prompted the viceroy Francesco Ferdinando to build a quarantine hospital, which was completed three years later, but it is too close to the town. Over 100 years later the ban was issued which prohibited the burials of public cemetery in churches, so the Lazaretto became the non-Catholic cemetery of the heterodox. Another epidemic, this time of cholera, made it even bigger. Then, this place was even transformed into a football field for the children od Acquasanta: abandoned for 50 years, it was finally recovered and can be visited today. |
